COVID-19 State Payroll Tax Support

State Governments have also shown their support to businesses by providing relief to the State Payroll Tax requirements.

Note: Each State has provided additional relief options since our last newsletter last week.

Australian Capital Territory (ACT)

Payroll tax payments have been waived for a period of 6 months from April to September 2020. The Payroll Tax waive only applies to businesses classified as prohibited businesses activity in ACT (see link for more details).

Revenue ACT – Payroll Tax waiver

New South Wales (NSW)

Payroll Tax has been waived until the end of the 2019-20 financial year to all businesses with Payroll Costs up to $10 million. In addition, their annual tax liability will be reduced by 25% when lodging their annual reconciliation (due on 28 July 2020).

Businesses with Payroll costs over $10 million can defer all payments for up to 6 months.

Northern Territory (NT)

Northern Territories have implemented a number of business relief measures under the Job Rescue and Recovery Plan (see link for more details).

Queensland (QLD)

Businesses with Payroll Costs under $6.5 million will receive a refund of payroll tax paid over November and December 2019. Payroll Tax has also been waived for the period from January to March 2020.

Businesses with Payroll Costs over $6.5 million who have been negatively affected by the Coronavirus can apply for a refund for the January and February Payroll Tax paid and for a deferral for the remaining 2020 Financial Year.

Revenue Queensland – Coronavirus Payroll Tax Relief

South Australia (SA)

Businesses with Payroll Costs under $4 million will receive a 6-month Payroll Tax waiver for the period from April to September 2020.

Businesses with Payroll Costs over $4 million that have been negatively affected by the Coronavirus, can apply to defer Payroll Tax payments for the period from April to September 2020 to October 2020.

Revenue South Australia – COVID19 Relief

Tasmania (TAS)

Businesses with Payroll costs up to $5 million that have been negatively affected by the Coronavirus can apply to receive a 3-month payroll tax waiver for the period from March to June 2020.

Additional Payroll Tax waiver provisions have been provided for the following industries: Seafood, Tourism and Hospitality.

Victoria (VIC)

Businesses with Payroll costs up to $3 million will receive a 12-month Payroll Tax waiver for the 2020 Financial Year. All Payroll Tax payments made over this period have been refunded to the businesses.

Revenue Victoria – Tax Relief for eligible businesses

Western Australia (WA)

Businesses with Payroll costs under $7.5 million will receive a Payroll Tax waive for the period from March to June 2020.
